On the 25th July 2009, the Western Australian State Championships for HO scale slotcar racing were held at Edith Cowan University Joondalup Campus.
Three classes of cars were raced.
T-Jets (Classic cars with no traction magnets. These can slide around corners)
Stock (Tomy Turbo cars which are fairly fast but have limited traction magnets)
Super Stock (For the price, these are very quick. Basically a Tomy SG+ with silicone rear tyres and a lightweight body. Other brands are also allowed in this class)
T-Jet Class Results
The action started early on Saturday July the 25th. It was T-Jet practice from 9am with lots of spectators rolling in for T-Jet Qualifying at 10:15am. The reverse order of entry qualifying showing the racing in this class was going to be much quicker than at the practice meet 1 month ago. Lots of high 7 second times filled the qualifying chart until Karl qualified last showing how much of a handle he has on these non-magnatraction cars, producing a 6.8 second lap to be almost a full second clear of the rest of the field.
Heat 1 started with Garth turning 20 laps on red, which remained as the bracket high for the first heat.
Heat 2, the fast qualifiers, showing steel early with Dave and Karl running 23 laps each on yellow and red.
The finalists were: Karl Hashfield – 90 laps Dave Gannaway – 85 laps Shawn Jewel – 82 laps Garth McNeil (the only person from heat 1 to make the final) – 75 laps.
The final started with Karl cruising to 23 on red, Dave and Shawn only 2 laps back. Karl went 2 laps further again in bracket 2, Dave and Shawn staying in the game now 4 laps back. Karl made another 23 on white in the third bracket with Dave going down fighting on 22 laps. Karl sealed his victory with 22 laps on yellow in the last bracket.

Stock Class Results
The Stock (Turbo) class saw two young competitors, Isaiah and Jacob, making their HO Slotcar racing debut. Talk about an initiation of fire, learning the ropes at the State Championships. However, the two youngsters held themselves together recording 5.8 and 6.8 second times in qualifying, more importantly, making very few “Out of slot” excursions. Some fast mid to low 4 second laps littered the boards until “the man” Karl showed the way with a 3.905 second lap (faster than some of the SG+ cars)!
Heat 1 saw Chad’s 35 lap bracket on red being the high.
Red lane Proved to be the quickest again in Heat 2 with Karl turning 40 laps in the first bracket.
The People to move into the final were: Karl Hashfield – 152 laps Dave Gannaway – 134 laps Chad Raven (from heat 1) – 131 laps Garth McNeil – 128 laps.
The final started with Karl reeling off a hot 41 laps on red (a bracket high for the Turbos), Dave and Garth doing their best with 36 and 37 laps. Karl continued with some muscle work in the second, running 39 laps on blue with Dave right up there running 38 laps on yellow. Karl and Dave both went 37 laps in the third however, Karl turned 39 laps in the last bracket to seal a great win.

Super Stock Class Results
This was the final class of the day, but that didn’t mean things were starting to slow down! In the past, the BSRT G3 had been the dominant car for this class, but now a Slotech T2 and two Wizzard Storms competed together to liven things up. One of the aims of the State Championships was to push the limits of HO cars, and these cars in particular.
Best Presented Car was awarded to Karl Hashfield, by Gary Richie from DU Model Cars, for his Green and Orange Mazda 787B replica paint scheme. The paint job wasn’t the only thing that was specky as Karl pushed the T2 (the only one in Perth) to a top qualifying 2.633 second lap. Only 2 other cars recorded sub 3 second times including Dave with a G3 (2.846) and Garth, with a Karl built “black” SG+ chassis (2.950). Karl’s 7 year old son Ben was 4th qualifier on an “Oh so close” 3.033 and Shae scored an impressive 3.879 in his first drive of a Super Stock car. There were 9 entries giving us 3 heats with 3 racers in each were run.
Heat 1 was a battle of the youngsters. Shae, Hayley, and Ben fought it out good and hard with Ben running enough laps to make the final!
Heat 2 saw Geoff out-pace Shawn and Chad with his Storm, booking himself a spot in the final.
In heat 3, Karl and Dave showed some experience by filling the top 2 spots in the main.
Final competitors were: Karl Hashfield – 218 laps Dave Gannaway – 199 laps Ben Hashfield – 186 laps Geoff Burnham – 184 laps The final was a race to remember, Karl and Dave fighting it out with a T2 vs G3 battle. The first bracket saw Karl wheeling his T2 to 54 laps on the nice red lane, 6 laps clear of the nearest car. Karl did 56 laps in the second bracket however Dave wasn’t going to let him have it all his own way by running 55 laps. Dave made good ground on the red lane in bracket 3, hitting a 52 to draw level on laps with Karl, going into the last bracket. Karl won the last by 5 laps giving him the victory. Ben and Geoff fought it out for 3rd with young Ben recording a very commendable place over the elder statesman.
